Travel Journal | HK & Macau

On this trip, I opted for a minimalist approach to my art supplies. I brought along a single journal and a small sketchbook. Additionally, I packed two watercolor palettes, although I only used one. I also brought a set of Caran D’Ache water-soluble pencils, some brushes, and fountain pens.

Hong Kong days

We arrived in Hong Kong around noon. However, I had an urgent matter to attend to, which unfortunately left me with no chance to sketch.

The next day, I set out early to run some errands. As a habit, I always find the post office first to purchase stamps for sending postcards to family and friends. Although I planned to take the ferry, I couldn’t find the Star Ferry dock where I remembered it, so I took the subway across the harbor to Tsim Sha Tsui. After finishing my errands, I searched for the Eslite Bookstore, a renowned Taiwanese bookstore with seats by the window offering a good view of the harbor for sketching. It started raining heavily, but luckily, I found a seat by the window.

Later, I took a bus to Cheung Sha Wan, looking forward to finding the lane where local urban sketchers plan to sketch. However, the weather didn’t cooperate, and I took shelter in a busy yet cozy cafe nearby. There, I enjoyed a late lunch and sketched from a photo instead. Despite the change of plans, I could still capture the essence of the place, and the experience was just as rewarding.

The next day was wet, so we forgoed breakfast at a local restaurant and ate at the hotel. As I was up early, I decided to venture out and find a post office.

We left after breakfast to catch the ferry to Macau.

Macau days

Upon our arrival in Macau at midday, we went shopping and sightseeing. I took some time to sketch at Ruinas de São Paulo, Largo do Senado, and attended the Igreja da Sé Catedral church service.

Before heading back to our rooms, we decided to check out the casinos and the night lights. Very impressive!

The following day, after breakfast at a well-known dimsum restaurant, I was thrilled to finally visit teamLab SuperNature at The Venetian after missing out on it in Shanghai. I had planned to sketch in Macau afterward, but I found myself in a creative rut. The experience at SuperNature was genuinely and positively overwhelming. The exhibits’ immersive art and interactive nature left me feeling inspired and a little lost in the best possible way.

Despite the day initially feeling unproductive without any sketches, I stumbled upon an unexpected muse: a parked plane. As we waited for our flight back to Shanghai, I found myself sketching the plane, realizing that inspiration can truly be found in the most unexpected places.

The post turned out to be longer than I had expected. I hope that you found the journey through this post to be an enjoyable experience.

Thank you for stopping by.
